About Me.

Nyawa United is a humanitarian project promoting gender equality and empowering rural communities in the Southern Province of Zambia, through sports, health and educational programmes.

Project Activities

Nyawa United Girls' Football Team

Nyawa United is a humanitarian project that was established in January 2019, with the idea of sending a girls' football team to Norway Cup. The project succeeded in sending Nyawa United to Norway Cup at the tournament's 50th Anniversary in 2022. The team made history by being the first rural girls' football team from the Southern African region to ever participate.

Over 30 girls train together every week, together with their Coach Kelvin. Through football, the girls have established new friendships, developed qualities in cooperation, communication, and team play. They have also developed skills on and off the field. These are qualities that are transferable to other arenas in life, both at school and work life.

The Nyawa Community Centre

The project is in the process of building a community centre with a library close to the football pitch. This will serve as a meeting place for the local community.

Part of the building will be a dedicated space for sporting facilities, including changing rooms and where educational workshops will be held. The aim is to facilitate for inclusion and participation into sport activities.

Libraries play an important role in the dissemination of knowledge. Establishing a library in Nyawa will contribute to a development of a reading culture, early literacy and reading skill development, as well as local economic impact.

In addition, we are installing Internet in the library. Access to internet will foster digital inclusion, advance education, health care and female entrepreneurship.

Mission

To build and sustain a vibrant movement for girls and women in Nyawa through sports, health and educational programmes.

We draw our inspiration from the renowned words of Shirley Chisholm:

"If they don't give you a seat at the table, bring a folding chair"

This powerful quote exhorts us not to passively wait for opportunities or invitations but to assertively take control of our lives, carve out our own space, and seize the opportunities that come our way.
